Using projects in the ESL class

Projects are another useful away to teach students English. The project can be as simple as writing an essay. The best way seems to be to think of the outcome that is desired and then work backwards to the skills and knowledge that the students need. The goal could be to say - write a 1000 word essay, based on at least five different articles or books that the student has read, properly referenced. In this case the student needs to be able to complete tasks such as find articles and books in the library or online, know how to use the information in their essays (quoting, summarizing, paraphrasing), know how to reference their sources, be able to structure an essay, and finally have some ideas on the topic themselves.
