IELTS essay correction

If you are taking an IELTS exam the writing component can be a particularly trick part of the exam. For a start, most candidates’ weakest skill is their writing and overall candidates score half a point lower this category.

The problem then comes how to improve your IELTS writing. Like speaking it can be difficult to improve your writing on your own. My suggestion is that you start by reading my website about the threedifferent kinds of IELTS essays. I also have pages that explain the IELTS task1 academic and IELTS task 1 general (letter). I also have some IELTS YouTube videos that explain the grading system and also walk you through the essay writing process.

If you want to actually write some tasks, and I definitely recommend this, I offer a service to correct your IELTS writing and also provide you with feedback on how to improve your score.

Blogging versus handwritten journals

Why write blogs!

The main value of writing a blog versus a journal in for English students is that students can easily share their blogs with their friends and family overseas, add photos to enrich their writing, and the blogs are less likely to be lost or damaged than a paper journal.

The main purpose of this activity is to get students involved in free writing. Free writing means that students try to write down their ideas quickly, without worrying about using the dictionary to check spelling and grammar. The value of the activity is that it can develop writing FLUENCY, which essentially means that students can write at greater speeds.

Class trips for ESL classes

Class trips for ESL classes can have many benefits including team building, learning in a real environment, and building of vocabulary in a certain area. Mostly, they are just a fun break from classroom activities. There aren’t a lot of choices for excursions in Adelaide, particular in the winter. I just took my class to Port Adelaide. Overall, it was a successful trip we took a boat ride and saw three dolphins, climbed the lighthouse and visited the Port Adelaide Nautical Museum. All this for only $5, I would like to recommend this trip to other teachers!

Using projects in the ESL class

Projects are another useful away to teach students English. The project can be as simple as writing an essay. The best way seems to be to think of the outcome that is desired and then work backwards to the skills and knowledge that the students need. The goal could be to say - write a 1000 word essay, based on at least five different articles or books that the student has read, properly referenced. In this case the student needs to be able to complete tasks such as find articles and books in the library or online, know how to use the information in their essays (quoting, summarizing, paraphrasing), know how to reference their sources, be able to structure an essay, and finally have some ideas on the topic themselves.
